Dog (allegedly) attacked Realtor, Realtor shot dog
Is the concealed-weapon Realtor right to claim self-defense or were the homeowners deceived?
Whenever someone brings up the dangers of pit bulls, I usually give them side eye. I have strolled into a building with 11 pit bulls who used to be involved in dog fights, and I never felt any kind of fear. Then again, a pit bull was one of the first five dogs I walked when I signed up for Wag! She leaped up and licked me on the lips as soon as I opened her crate. After almost five years (next month) and 99 dogs, I can still confirm that the most intense dog I ever tried to walk was an Australian Shepherd. We never made it out of the doorway, although I gave this dog at least three treats (on the floor) to try to win it over.
That was my first thought when I heard recent news about the Realtor who shot the loose Australian Shepherd-beagle mix in a homeowner’s yard last Thursday, Feb. 22. I personally know what it’s like to be in a room with a dog of the first breed, and the dog I’m talking about was loose as well. But it never even slightly occurred to me to wish I had a weapon to shoot a dog who was in its own home! If anything, I’m the intruder.

Initially, the agent was touring the internal part of the property, reports KKTV. The dog was in the basement at the time. However, when the agent wanted to see that area of the home, the homeowners’ plans were originally to take the dog outside. When the agent tried to get to the basement from the yard, the dog started barking and pulled hard enough to get loose from the leash it was on. As a dog owner who has experienced other dogs yanking away from their owners and my own dog who got loose and ran into the street, sometimes accidents happen even with good intentions.

Yet again, it still didn’t occur to me to shoot an oncoming dog. I’ve shifted my leg. I’ve blocked a dog with my dog-walking bag. I’ve stepped on the middle of two leashes so owners could catch their loose dogs. I’ve even grabbed the leash of a dog trying to hump my own dog. I do ponder if this instinct comes from not having cynophobia (fear of dogs) though. But then there’s the other question: Why did this Realtor, who had a conceal carry permit, need a gun for a simple walk-through in the first place?
