Side effects of wrong dental dog bone: Diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite, sad owner
When I needed to run errands, I knew that I could trust my German Shepherd to not destroy anything while I was gone. While my untrained Labrador Retriever crossbreed was a different story, and would dig in the garbage can or come back after breaking something within minutes, I am determined to make sure my Hound mix leans more toward the Shepherd category. I’d never attempted crate training until I adopted this dog (in a condo environment) — a place with no basement or backyard to run freely and have the Zoomies.
But after completing nine days of bed rest from spaying and noticing my dog seemed far more chill by the day, I pondered whether I could leave my newly healed dog alone and not crated while I went on a grocery run. She treats her crate like a dog house anyway, constantly going in and out at her leisure. Her stitches healed nicely. She was her usual happy self, and she was ecstatic to leap onto the window sill to be the neighborhood watchdog again.
When Pedigree says “not suitable,” they really mean it. There should be more warnings on Pedigree’s Dentastix FAQs and the box about what exactly happens when you feed a dog the same exact treat with the same ingredients but two times the amount.
I tested my theory; she was uncrated when I left. I returned 1.5 hours later and everything was in place, with her sitting in her dog bed and looking at “Deep Sleeping Music for Puppy.” My next test: How would she do if I didn’t crate her overnight? My other two dogs weren’t crated. They slept on the floor comfortably. I tested that theory and woke up the next morning with everything still in place. No accidents. Just a dog staring at me and ready to play.

I was ecstatic. I hugged her and petted her, and I felt like the proudest dog owner on Earth. Although I always gave her one Pedigree Dentastix in the morning before our first walk of the day, I remembered I accidentally bought a second box for large dogs. Dentastix for large dogs were two times the size I was used to. I gushed. She’d been such a good doggie. Go ahead and have the bigger version! You earned it! And the sickness started within the hour.
