Glen Scott is fun to watch, and his handyman tools have become a routine for me. My social isolation dream board consists of me watching do-it-yourself tips for 30 minutes per day. I found his channel by accident and have watched every single video on his YouTube channel. But it was this video about dog house landscaping that caught my attention the most — even after watching him build a dog house from scratch. While I could’ve easily seen my own dogs in dog houses more like the one pictured below, I cringe thinking of all the damage they would’ve done to Glen’s version with synthetic grass, landscaping rocks and step stones.

However, my parents’ second dog while I was in college was Faith (German Shepherd) who aced dog training classes. She then went on to dig up at least four inches of concrete on our basement floor, near the door.
When she wanted to go out, she wasn’t trying to wait for us to open the door. She just decided she would try to dig her way to the other side. (Note: She went outside several times per day. This was just something fun she chose to do, and no one knew about it for several weeks because she ran around from the hole she was digging whenever we came downstairs.)

The idea of having a pretty, decorative backyard was laughable. Glen’s dog Diamond seems to be used to it, from the way she peacefully sits in that dog house. My dogs? Not so much. But there are plenty of people who have been able to master keeping a lawn in the backyard while also having a dog.
Here’s how:
