Can’t win with a dog, can’t win without one
Why are some men so obsessed with critiquing single women?
“Ready to Love” is one of those dating shows that always looks like it’s a good time and a bunch of laughs in between a few “you played yourself” moments. One of those YPY moments came in the form of cast member, Carrington, who was startlingly condescending when he knew he was being eliminated from the show. Up until that moment, he seemed pretty chill to me. Handsome too. I shrugged and moved on with watching the show.
After it was over, I noticed a Twitter response to his reaction, “Carrington was one episode away from turning into #KevinSamuels #ReadyToLove @OWNTV.” I didn’t understand the reference, so I visited Kevin R. Samuels’ Instagram page to figure out why someone would compare the two. Good grief. I should’ve just ignored the tweet altogether.
The Instagram page is full of unsolicited advice for single (black) women about why they suck; the ongoing disgust appears to be women who are not crying sleepless nights wondering why they’re not married yet. It’s hotep antics in their finest hour. (Urban dictionary defines the slang version of hoteps as those who “associate black identity with patriarchal family structure, viewing homosexuality and transgenderism as a sin and a disorder, and generally viewing social progress as a mean to emasculate the black, straight male.”)

Browse around his Instagram page for a bit and there’s plenty of bizarre advice: Women can’t be in a community if they’re not married; photos of hair weave with captions like “the top 10% of female earners saying a relationship isn’t a ‘priority’ is a financial death sentence in solitary confinement”; and why women should prioritize “manifesting” a man instead of money. It’s pretty much the kind of misogynistic, old-fashioned bullshit I usually pay no mind to. It also explains why not one person on my timeline nor my social circle had ever brought him to my attention although he has a million followers.
