My dog is forever skeptical of my cooking, and it’s not altogether her fault. I usually eat a grilled cheese sandwich (Tofurky meat with Daiya cheeze) for breakfast. Due to my own impatience and wanting it to grill evenly, I have a habit of wandering around my condo doing other stuff, waiting for the bread to cook properly before I smash the sandwich together. And it pisses my dog off, mainly because one time months ago, I strolled around too long and the bread burned. The smoke alarm went off. Glutton for punishment, I did it a second time — same deal. The smoke alarm went off again. And she was having none of it after that.
Months later, even with the kitchen window or back door open, she darts underneath the dining room table every single time she sees me turn a stove knob. It’s the most passive aggressive way of saying, “This chick cannot cook.” I kinda want to laugh, and so did the 1.6K people who liked my tweet about it.
But then I realized this smoke detector issue was becoming a bigger issue. When our condo maintenance team comes by each week, they test all the smoke detectors. Then she whines and barks again — loudly. She has a bone to pick with how loud that sound is, and I cannot blame her. After all, dogs hear at a frequency range of 40 to 60,000 hertz (Hz). Human hearing range is approximately 20 and 20,000 Hz.

So how do they (or I) test the smoke detectors on a weekly (or monthly basis, according to the U.S. Fire Administration) basis if it’s terrifying my dog?
