Dog walking 101: When you pass a ‘Beware of Dog’ sign, keep your dog close
The most significant reason for purchasing a “Beware of (the) Dog” sign is to notify anyone passing by that there will be a dog on the other side of a fence. Anytime I see one of those signs, I keep the dog I’m walking on the opposite side of me or close enough to my hip that I can move at a moment’s notice. Unless you are an absolute newbie to dogs, there’s no way in the world you should ever let a dog of any size get close enough to the gate to the point where either dog can reach muzzle to muzzle.
So I was confused by recent news regarding a Detroit police officer who killed a woman’s dog behind her fence. According to WDIV, home surveillance footage shows a female police officer with a K9, who approached the fence of a private home. Although a “Beware of the Dog” sign is obvious from the 6-foot-high metal fence, a police commander is blaming the owner and telling Detroit dog owners to keep their dogs in backyards so “this won’t be an issue.”

That’s not how dog owning works. When someone gets a dog, the dog has the lay of the land on private property, meaning it can run in the backyard and front yard. The only time this would become a problem is if the area is not fenced in at such a rate that the dog can get loose. But in the case of this video footage, the K9 was close enough that the homeowner’s dog snapped and bit his muzzle. While the debate can be made for the homeowner not calling her dog away from the fence before this incident could occur, I’m still left puzzled as to how or why the K9 would even have the opportunity to get close enough for the other dog to be able to get to him.
