I understand the debates about whether Chris Brown or Usher are the closest thing to Michael Jackson. Vocally, Usher is in the lead. Performance and dance wise, Chris Brown takes it — easily. Usher is a great dancer, but it always looks like he’s either skating or doing choreography. Chris Brown just seems to wake up, wash his face and do a full-blown concert for fun. Of course there are some other amazing dancers, including Teyana Taylor and Ciara, but there’s something extra fluid about Chris Brown.
Still, when I hear Usher sing, I think of what the “R&B Money Podcast” says about singers like Luke and Mario, who you hear singing and never ever forget them. (I had never heard of Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things” before, and I re-listened to Mario sing this song so many times that I genuinely couldn’t tell you a total. I would go back and listen again the next day and the day after that. Same goes for Luke singing his own song, “I Want You.”)
With all that said, Usher’s “Tiny Desk” performance is arguably my favorite of all “Tiny Desk” performances. I already knew I would love it 60 seconds in, but Junee’s reaction to the entire performance entertained me. I played it a couple more times because she just kept gawking at the TV like he was the human version of baby carrots. (This dog will do any trick for a baby carrot.)
If you have not seen Usher perform, you should. If you have, watch it again — cause why not?
